Matlala Allegedly Claimed Close Ties to Senior Police Officials

Matlala Allegedly Boasted of Ties to Senior Police Officials, Inquiry Hears

Witness tells Madlanga Commission businessman attempted to intimidate investigators during raid linked to missing former associate.

Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala allegedly claimed to have close relationships with several high-ranking police officials during a law enforcement operation at his Centurion residence, the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard.

The allegations emerged during testimony from a member of the Gauteng Counterintelligence Operations Unit, identified only as Witness C, who appeared before the commission this week.

According to the witness, Matlala began mentioning the names of senior police officials while investigators were conducting a raid at his home in December.

Senior Officers Allegedly Named

Witness C testified that Matlala referred to several senior figures within the South African Police Service, including Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, General Feroz Khan and General Shibiri.

The businessman also allegedly claimed to have a family connection to General Senona.

According to the testimony, these remarks were made while investigators were carrying out official duties at the property.

Claims Viewed as Attempted Intimidation

The witness told the commission that he believed Matlala’s comments were intended to intimidate members of the investigation team.

Investigators had reportedly been searching the property as part of efforts linked to the disappearance of Matlala’s former business associate, Jerry Boshoga.

Boshoga remains missing after allegedly being kidnapped, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Witness C said the repeated references to influential individuals appeared designed to discourage or influence investigators during the operation.

Inquiry Continues

The testimony forms part of ongoing proceedings before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is examining matters relating to criminal networks, law enforcement and allegations of influence within state institutions.

Matlala has attracted significant public attention in recent years due to his association with the controversial Tembisa Hospital tender matter and other high-profile allegations.

The commission has not yet made any findings regarding the claims presented during the hearings, and testimony continues as evidence is gathered from various witnesses.

Focus on Links Between Crime and State Institutions

The latest revelations have intensified scrutiny over allegations that individuals facing criminal investigations may seek to leverage relationships with influential officials.

The commission is expected to continue hearing evidence aimed at determining whether such relationships existed and whether any improper influence was exerted over investigations.

For now, the allegations remain part of testimony before the inquiry, with findings and conclusions expected to be made once the commission completes its work.

The case continues to draw widespread public interest as investigators seek answers regarding both the disappearance of Boshoga and broader allegations raised before the commission.
