Zuma Removes Nomvalo From MK Party Parliamentary Caucus Following Secretary-General Dismissal

Former president cites leadership, governance and organisational concerns as MK Party reshuffles key positions ahead of local government elections.

Former president Jacob Zuma has removed Sibonelo Nomvalo from the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s parliamentary caucus, just a day after relieving him of his duties as the party’s secretary-general.

The decision was communicated in a letter dated 22 October 2026, in which Zuma confirmed that Nomvalo’s removal as secretary-general took immediate effect. The letter further stated that Nomvalo would no longer serve as a member of the MK Party caucus in the National Assembly.

The move marks another significant leadership change within the party as it prepares for the upcoming local government elections.

Zuma Lists Concerns Over Leadership

According to the letter, Zuma cited a number of concerns relating to Nomvalo’s leadership and administrative responsibilities within the party.

Among the issues raised were concerns surrounding the councillor selection process, the establishment of high-level deployment committees without the knowledge of senior party leadership, and delays in the delivery of campaign materials.

Additional concerns reportedly included changes to the parliamentary whippery structure that were allegedly implemented without informing party leadership, as well as internal factionalism and questions regarding alleged dual remuneration from both Parliament and the party.

Zuma indicated that these concerns contributed to the decision to remove Nomvalo from his positions within the organisation.

Removal From Caucus Confirmed

In the correspondence, Zuma formally informed Nomvalo that he was no longer part of the MK Party’s parliamentary caucus.

He also requested that Nomvalo cooperate with party structures during the transition process to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.

Despite the disciplinary action, Zuma acknowledged Nomvalo’s contribution to the party and thanked him for his service.

The former president expressed gratitude for Nomvalo’s efforts and wished him success in his future endeavours.

MK Party Announces Leadership Changes

The party recently confirmed several leadership adjustments aimed at strengthening organisational efficiency ahead of next year’s elections.

Following Nomvalo’s departure as secretary-general, Lindiwe Mtshali has been appointed as acting secretary-general.

Meanwhile, MK Party national spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu has been assigned additional responsibilities linked to the office of the deputy secretary-general while continuing in his role as party spokesperson.

Party officials said the changes are intended to improve accountability, communication and organisational coordination.

Parliamentary Status Remains Unclear

While Nomvalo has been removed from the party’s parliamentary caucus, the announcement does not indicate that he has lost his seat in the National Assembly.

Political analysts note that caucus membership and parliamentary membership are separate matters, meaning further processes would be required for any change to his status as a Member of Parliament.

For now, the confirmed decision relates specifically to his removal from the MK Party caucus and his dismissal as secretary-general.

Focus Shifts to Elections

The latest leadership shake-up comes at a crucial time for the MK Party as it prepares for the 2026 local government elections.

The party has sought to position itself as a major political force since entering the national political landscape, making internal stability and organisational effectiveness key priorities.

With new acting leaders now in place, attention will turn to how the party navigates the months ahead and whether the leadership changes strengthen its readiness for the next electoral contest.
