Oceana Beats Lucky Star Shortages With Strong Earnings Growth

Oceana Defies Lucky Star Supply Challenges as Earnings Surge

Fishing and food processing giant Oceana Group expects strong profit growth despite supply shortages affecting its iconic Lucky Star brand.

South African fishing and food processing company Oceana Group expects a significant increase in earnings for its 2026 financial year, driven by improved operating performance across several business units and a resilient contribution from its flagship Lucky Star brand.

In a trading update, the group said earnings per share are expected to increase by between 45% and 55%, rising to between 815 and 870 cents. Headline earnings per share (HEPS) are forecast to climb by between 46% and 56%, reaching between 825 and 880 cents compared to 564.8 cents recorded in the prior year.

Strong Growth Despite Shortages

The company said earnings growth was mainly supported by stronger operating profit and lower interest costs.

According to Oceana, improved performances from its United States fishmeal and fish oil operations, as well as its wild-caught seafood segment, contributed significantly to the positive results through higher volumes and stronger pricing.

The group also highlighted a solid contribution from Lucky Star Foods, despite inventory constraints caused by a shortage of raw materials.

Lucky Star Overcomes Supply Constraints

Earlier this year, Oceana reported that Lucky Star experienced mixed trading conditions because of shortages in frozen fish supplies used in canned pilchard production.

The supply shortages reduced local canning production volumes by approximately 60%, placing pressure on manufacturing costs and limiting product availability.

Despite these challenges, Lucky Star benefited from stronger sales values, lower freight costs, improved product mix and increased volumes of locally sourced pilchards.

The company noted that inventory levels ended the period significantly lower than the previous year due to the constrained fish supply environment.

Iconic Brand Remains Resilient

Lucky Star remains one of South Africa’s best-known consumer brands and continues to perform strongly despite operational challenges.

The brand has consistently ranked among the country’s most trusted and recognised household names, regularly earning top honours at major consumer brand awards.

Its ability to deliver a positive contribution despite significant supply constraints highlights the strength of its market position and customer loyalty.

Results Due in November

Oceana Group is expected to publish its full financial results for the 2026 financial year on 26 November 2026.

Investors will be watching closely to assess whether the strong earnings growth can be sustained and how effectively the company continues managing supply challenges affecting Lucky Star and other parts of its operations.

The latest trading update suggests that Oceana has successfully navigated a difficult operating environment and remains on course for one of its strongest earnings performances in recent years.
