Police Seize R200 Million Cocaine Shipment at OR Tambo Airport
R200 Million Cocaine Seizure at OR Tambo as Police Hunt Suspect
Gauteng police intercept massive drug shipment from Brazil in one of the country’s largest cocaine busts.
South African police have seized more than R200 million worth of cocaine at OR Tambo International Airport, dealing a major blow to international drug trafficking operations.
According to authorities, the drugs arrived on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, before being intercepted by law enforcement officials during a coordinated operation.
The seizure forms part of ongoing efforts by police and border security agencies to combat transnational organised crime and drug smuggling through South Africa’s busiest airport.
216 Blocks of Cocaine Recovered
National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that investigators recovered 216 blocks of cocaine during the operation.
Forensic experts from the South African Police Service’s Forensic Science Laboratory were deployed to the scene to test the substances found in the packages.
The tests confirmed that the seized material was cocaine.
Authorities estimate the street value of the drugs at more than R200 million.
Suspect Still Being Sought
While the drugs have been confiscated, police have not yet located the individual believed to be responsible for transporting the shipment.
Investigators are continuing to trace those linked to the consignment and determine whether the seizure forms part of a larger international trafficking network.
No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
Growing Focus on Drug Trafficking Routes
South African law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to disrupt drug smuggling operations at major entry points, particularly airports and ports.
International routes connecting South America and Africa have increasingly come under scrutiny as authorities target organised crime syndicates involved in narcotics trafficking.
Brazil has frequently been identified as a key transit point in global cocaine trafficking networks due to its extensive transport links and strategic location.
Authorities Continue Crackdown
The latest seizure adds to a series of high-value drug interceptions made at OR Tambo International Airport in recent years.
Police say investigations are ongoing and further arrests could follow as detectives analyse evidence gathered during the operation.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to dismantling drug trafficking syndicates and preventing illegal narcotics from entering South African communities.
The successful operation highlights the role of intelligence-driven policing and forensic investigations in combating organized crime and protecting the country’s borders.
