Cachalia Moves to Appoint Mkhwanazi as Hawks National Head
Cachalia Seeks Cabinet Approval to Appoint Mkhwanazi as Hawks Boss
Acting Police Minister moves to place KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner at the helm of South Africa’s elite crime-fighting unit.
Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia has initiated the formal process to appoint Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks.
The move forms part of efforts to strengthen the leadership of South Africa’s elite crime-fighting unit, which is responsible for tackling organised crime, corruption and other serious priority offences.
Cabinet Concurrence Required
According to the Ministry of Police, the appointment process is being conducted in terms of the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995.
The legislation stipulates that the Minister of Police may appoint the National Head of the Hawks, but only with the concurrence of Cabinet.
To meet this requirement, Cachalia has submitted a Cabinet Memorandum seeking approval for Mkhwanazi’s appointment.
The memorandum is expected to be presented at the next available Cabinet meeting.
Mkhwanazi Tipped for Key Crime-Fighting Role
Mkhwanazi currently serves as the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner and is widely recognised for his leadership in tackling organised crime and violent criminal networks in the province.
If approved, he would take over leadership of the Hawks, one of South Africa’s most important law enforcement units responsible for investigating complex and high-profile criminal cases.
Strengthening the Police Reset Agenda
The Police Ministry said the appointment aligns with government’s broader Police Reset Agenda, which aims to improve the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies.
“The DPCI plays a critical role in South Africa’s fight against organised crime, corruption and other serious priority offences,” the ministry said.
Officials believe stable leadership is essential to ensuring strategic direction, operational efficiency and stronger crime-fighting outcomes.
Current Hawks Leadership
The Hawks are currently led by Lieutenant General Siphesihle Nkosi in an acting capacity.
A permanent appointment is viewed as important for providing certainty and continuity within the organisation as it continues to investigate major criminal syndicates, corruption cases and priority crimes.
Appointment Still Subject to Approval
While Cachalia has identified Mkhwanazi as his preferred candidate, the appointment cannot be finalised until Cabinet provides its concurrence.
Once approved, the appointment will also be reported to Parliament in accordance with legislative requirements.
The decision is likely to attract significant public interest, given Mkhwanazi’s profile within South African policing and the critical role the Hawks play in combating organised crime and corruption across the country.
