NSFAS Receives 868,000 Applications for 2027 Academic Year

Students urged to apply before deadline as NSFAS confirms no extension will be granted.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has received approximately 868,000 applications for the 2027 academic year, with the application period set to close at the end of October.

NSFAS has reiterated that there will be no extension of the application deadline, urging prospective students who have not yet applied to do so before submissions officially close.

The funding scheme has also issued a warning about fraudulent individuals and organisations claiming to assist students in securing funding.

NSFAS Warns Against Scams

NSFAS spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi emphasized that applications must be submitted only through the scheme’s official channels.

He warned students and applicants against sharing personal information with third parties who claim they can guarantee funding approval or fast-track applications.

According to NSFAS, no individual or external organisation has the authority to influence funding decisions on behalf of applicants.

Protect Personal Information

The scheme urged applicants to remain vigilant against scams targeting students seeking financial assistance.

Mnisi said students should never pay anyone to assist with an NSFAS application or promise a positive funding outcome.

NSFAS stressed that all applications are assessed according to approved criteria and that funding decisions are made through official processes.

Fraud Reporting Channels Available

Applicants who suspect fraudulent activity have been encouraged to report it immediately.

NSFAS said reports can be made anonymously through its fraud and corruption reporting channels.

The scheme continues to monitor and investigate allegations involving fraudulent application services and unauthorised individuals claiming to represent NSFAS.

Deadline Approaches

With hundreds of thousands of applications already submitted, NSFAS is encouraging learners planning to study at universities or TVET colleges in 2027 to complete their applications before the closing date.

Students are reminded to ensure all required supporting documents are submitted correctly to avoid delays or potential rejection of their applications.

As the deadline draws closer, NSFAS expects application volumes to increase significantly and has advised students not to wait until the last minute.

The funding scheme remains one of the most important sources of financial assistance for South African students pursuing higher education.
