Europa League: Sunderland Draw 1-1 at Lech Poznan in Thrilling Clash
Sunderland Held by Lech Poznan as Missed Chances Prove Costly in Europa League
Black Cats surrender early lead in Poland and settle for a draw after failing to capitalize on dominant periods.
Sunderland were forced to settle for a point in the UEFA Europa League after being held to a 1-1 draw by Polish champions Lech Poznan on Thursday evening.
The result ends Sunderland’s perfect start to their European campaign after victories over AZ Alkmaar and Torreense in their opening two matches.
Despite producing an encouraging attacking display for much of the contest, the Black Cats were left frustrated after failing to convert a series of chances that could have secured all three points.
Dream Start for Sunderland
Sunderland made the ideal start and took the lead after just two minutes.
A mistake from Lech Poznan goalkeeper Mateusz Lis gifted possession to winger Nilson Angulo, who reacted quickly before delivering a precise cross into the penalty area.
Timur Tutierov rose highest to head home his first goal for the club, giving the visitors an early advantage.
The striker was handed an opportunity in the starting lineup due to injuries to regular forwards Wilson Isidor and Brian Brobbey and repaid the faith shown in him with a crucial goal.
Visitors Dominate First Half
The Premier League side created numerous opportunities during an entertaining opening half.
Lech Poznan threatened on several occasions, but Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced an important save to keep his side ahead.
The hosts also came close when Daniel Hakans was played through on goal, only to send his effort wide of the target.
Sunderland, however, looked the more dangerous side and continually tested the Polish defence.
Manager Regis Le Bris was left frustrated that his team did not add to their lead before halftime, particularly after registering multiple shots on target and seeing Malick Fofana strike the woodwork.
Lech Poznan Fight Back
The hosts gradually improved after the interval and nearly equalised shortly after the hour mark.
Substitute Leo Bengtsson found himself completely unmarked at the back post but failed to keep his volley on target.
Fortunately for Lech, the missed opportunity did not prove costly.
With 20 minutes remaining, Bengtsson made amends by finding space inside the Sunderland penalty area before firing a superb half-volley beyond Roefs.
The goal was Lech Poznan’s first of the Europa League campaign and brought the home supporters to life.
Sunderland Push for Late Winner
Following the equaliser, Sunderland briefly came under pressure but managed to regain control of possession.
The Black Cats almost secured a dramatic late victory when teenage midfielder Chris Rigg unleashed a curling effort from outside the area.
His shot narrowly missed the target, leaving Sunderland to reflect on what might have been.
A victory would have made it three wins from three in Europe, but the draw still keeps Sunderland firmly on track in their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages.
Positives Despite Dropped Points
Although Sunderland will be disappointed not to have converted their chances into a victory, there were several encouraging signs for Le Bris.
The attacking trio of Angulo, Fofana and Tutierov regularly troubled the Lech defence, while the team displayed significantly more confidence and intensity than they have shown during their recent struggles in the Premier League.
Injuries to several important players, including Brobbey, Isidor, Thomas Meunier and Dan Ballard, also limited Sunderland’s options as the match wore on.
The result leaves the Black Cats in a strong position in the Europa League standings despite surrendering their perfect record.
Attention now turns back to domestic football, where Le Bris will hope his side can translate their improved European performances into Premier League results.
Sunderland’s next Europa League fixture will see them host Dinamo Zagreb on 5 November, while Lech Poznan travel to Portugal to face Benfica.
