SASSA Warns Grant Beneficiaries to Update Details or Risk Payment Suspension

Social grant recipients are being urged to keep their personal information up to date and respond promptly to review notices to avoid disruptions to their payments.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned grant beneficiaries that their payments could be suspended if they fail to respond to official grant review notices or submit required supporting documents within the specified timeframe.

The agency says grant reviews are a crucial part of ensuring that social assistance reaches qualifying beneficiaries and helps prevent irregular or fraudulent payments.

Reviews Essential for Continued Eligibility

According to SASSA, beneficiaries selected for review must cooperate with the process and provide any requested information or documentation.

The agency stressed that failure to respond to review notices may result in the suspension of grant payments in accordance with applicable legislation and procedures.

Officials have urged beneficiaries not to ignore notifications requesting them to undergo a review, as doing so could affect their continued access to social assistance.

Beneficiaries Encouraged to Check Grant Status

SASSA is also encouraging beneficiaries to take a proactive approach by checking the status of their grants regularly instead of relying solely on SMS notifications.

The agency’s WhatsApp service allows beneficiaries to access various services, including:

  • Checking grant status
  • Accessing eLife Certification services
  • Applying for social grants
  • Receiving general assistance

Beneficiaries can access the service by sending a “Hi” message to 082 601 0111.

Outdated Contact Details Pose Risks

SASSA highlighted that many beneficiaries fail to update their contact information after changing cellphone numbers, addresses or personal circumstances.

The agency warned that incorrect contact details may result in important notices being missed, including grant review requests and document submissions.

Beneficiaries are therefore encouraged to update SASSA whenever there are changes to:

  • Cellphone numbers
  • Residential addresses
  • Marital status
  • Financial circumstances
  • Other relevant personal information

Fighting Fraud and Protecting the System

SASSA said regular reviews form part of its broader efforts to protect the integrity of South Africa’s social assistance system.

By verifying beneficiary information and eligibility, the agency aims to ensure that funds are distributed fairly and that only qualifying individuals continue receiving grants.

Officials stressed that maintaining accurate records is a shared responsibility between the agency and beneficiaries.

Take Action Early

The agency has encouraged grant recipients to regularly verify their status, update their information when circumstances change and respond promptly to any communication from SASSA.

By staying informed and keeping records current, beneficiaries can help avoid unnecessary delays, suspensions or interruptions to their social grant payments.

SASSA reiterated that social grants remain available to qualifying beneficiaries, but continued eligibility depends on compliance with review requirements and accurate personal information.
