Power Outages Hit Parkhurst, Melville and Northcliff After Substation Faults
Major Power Outages Hit Johannesburg Suburbs After Multiple City Power Substation Faults
Residents in Parkhurst, Melville, Auckland Park, Northcliff and surrounding areas left without electricity as technicians investigate multiple network failures.
Thousands of residents across several Johannesburg suburbs have been affected by widespread power outages after faults were reported at three City Power substations on Thursday afternoon.
City Power confirmed that technical failures occurred at the Parkhurst, Hursthill and Roosevelt Park substations shortly after 13:00, disrupting electricity supply to numerous residential and commercial areas.
Technical teams have been deployed to investigate the causes of the outages and determine the extent of the damage.
Parkhurst Substation Fault Affects Multiple Areas
The largest outage is linked to the Parkhurst substation, which supplies electricity to several northern Johannesburg suburbs.
Areas affected include Parkhurst, Craighall Park, Greenside, Forest Town, Parkview, Victory Park, Saxonwold and Westcliff.
City Power said technicians are currently assessing the fault and that restoration timelines can only be provided once the investigation has been completed.
Residents have been advised to remain patient while repair teams work to identify the cause of the disruption.
Melville and Auckland Park Also Impacted
A separate fault at the Hursthill substation has left residents in Auckland Park and Melville without power.
According to City Power, repair crews are prioritising the most critical faults and will move to the Hursthill site after work at the Parkhurst substation has progressed.
The outages have affected households, businesses and institutions in the affected areas, with many residents reporting disruptions to daily activities.
Partial Restoration in Northcliff and Fairland
At the Roosevelt Park substation, which supplies electricity to Fairland, Roosevelt Park and Northcliff, City Power reported some progress in restoring service.
Approximately 30% of affected customers had their electricity supply restored by Thursday afternoon.
However, many residents in these areas remain without power as repair efforts continue.
The utility said work is ongoing to restore full supply as quickly and safely as possible.
No Estimated Restoration Time Yet
City Power has not yet provided an estimated time for full restoration across the affected suburbs.
The utility indicated that further updates will be issued once technical teams have completed assessments and developed repair plans.
Motorists and residents have been urged to exercise patience while crews work to stabilise the network.
The latest outages come amid ongoing concerns over electricity infrastructure challenges in Johannesburg, with several suburbs experiencing power interruptions linked to technical faults and ageing equipment in recent months.
For now, affected residents are advised to monitor official City Power communication channels for updates regarding repairs and restoration progress.
