Pensioners Call for Supermarket Discounts to Stretch SASSA Grants
Pensioners Call for Supermarket Discounts as Cost of Living Pressures Mount
Grant recipients urge government and retailers to introduce special discounts for older persons as rising expenses continue to outpace grant increases.
South African pensioners are calling for additional financial relief, with some proposing a dedicated discount card that would allow older persons to receive reduced prices at supermarkets and retail stores.
The proposal emerged during discussions among grant recipients, many of whom say the current Older Persons Grant is no longer keeping pace with the rising cost of living.
Supporters of the idea argue that a discount system could provide immediate relief on essential purchases, helping pensioners stretch their monthly income further.
Calls for a 25% Discount
One of the suggestions gaining attention is the introduction of a pensioner discount card linked to SASSA benefits.
Advocates believe qualifying beneficiaries could use the card at participating supermarkets to receive discounts on groceries and other necessities.
Some pensioners believe a discount of up to 25% on selected purchases would make a meaningful difference, especially for households that rely heavily on grant income.
The proposal comes as many older persons continue to face increasing costs related to food, transport, electricity and healthcare.
Bigger Grant or Lower Prices?
While some pensioners support a discount programme, others argue that government should instead increase the value of the Older Persons Grant.
Many recipients say the annual grant increases are often quickly absorbed by inflation and rising living expenses.
For older South Africans supporting extended families, the financial pressure can be even greater.
In many households, grandparents use their grants to help support grandchildren, unemployed relatives and other dependents, leaving little money available for their own needs.
As a result, many beneficiaries say their monthly grants are exhausted long before the next payment date arrives.
Current Grant Amount
The Older Persons Grant currently provides R2,400 per month to qualifying South Africans aged 60 years and older.
The grant was increased from R2,310 to R2,400 in April 2026, representing an increase of R90 per month.
While welcomed by beneficiaries, many pensioners argue that the increase has not been sufficient to offset the continued rise in consumer prices.
Supporters of the discount-card proposal believe savings at supermarkets could deliver greater financial relief than periodic grant increases alone.
For example, a pensioner spending approximately R2,000 on groceries each month could potentially save hundreds of rand if a substantial discount were introduced.
Would a Pensioner Discount Card Be Possible?
At present, neither SASSA nor government has announced plans to introduce a national pensioner discount programme.
Implementing such a system would require cooperation between government and private retailers.
Retail chains would need to either absorb the discount costs themselves or receive some form of support or incentive from government.
Supporters of the proposal argue that the administrative framework already exists, as millions of grant beneficiaries possess SASSA cards that could potentially be used to verify eligibility.
This could simplify the implementation process should future discussions around a discount programme take place.
Ongoing Debate on Relief Measures
The proposal highlights broader concerns regarding the affordability of essential goods and services for older South Africans.
As economic pressures continue to affect households across the country, discussions around additional support measures for pensioners are likely to continue.
Whether through larger grant increases, targeted discounts or new assistance programmes, many pensioners believe further intervention will be necessary to protect vulnerable households from rising living costs.
For now, however, the proposal remains a suggestion from grant recipients, with no official indication that a national pensioner discount card will be introduced.
