Mandla Ncikazi Leaves Orlando Pirates for New PSL Coaching Job

Mandla Ncikazi Leaves Orlando Pirates to Take PSL Head Coaching Role

Experienced coach ends successful five-year spell with the Buccaneers after accepting a new challenge in the Premier Soccer League.

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi, who has left the club to pursue a head coaching opportunity at another Premier Soccer League (PSL) side.

The announcement came just hours after Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou dismissed speculation of tensions within the club’s technical team during a media briefing on Thursday.

However, later on the same day, the Buccaneers officially revealed that Ncikazi had parted ways with the Soweto giants following discussions with club management regarding his future.

According to Pirates, the experienced coach expressed his desire to return to a head coaching role, prompting an amicable agreement for his departure.

End of a Successful Era

Ncikazi joined Orlando Pirates in 2021 after establishing himself as one of South Africa’s respected football coaches.

Before arriving at Pirates, he had successful coaching spells with Nathi Lions, Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows, earning a reputation for developing competitive teams and promoting attractive football.

During his time at Pirates, Ncikazi played a key role within the technical team and was part of one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.

He leaves the club having helped the Buccaneers secure nine trophies, serving primarily as assistant coach while also spending a brief period as co-coach in 2025.

His tactical expertise and experience were widely regarded as valuable assets within the Pirates setup.

Absence Sparked Speculation

Ncikazi’s departure follows weeks of speculation regarding his future at the club.

The former midfielder had notably been absent from the Pirates bench during several recent matches, including the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns in Durban.

During that match, television cameras captured him watching from the VIP hospitality section rather than occupying his usual position alongside the coaching staff.

Reports subsequently emerged suggesting a possible fallout between Ncikazi and head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

The club strongly rejected those reports at the time, describing them as unfounded speculation.

Thursday’s announcement indicates that Ncikazi’s departure was linked to a new career opportunity rather than any confirmed disagreement within the coaching structure.

Pirates Chairman Pays Tribute

Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza thanked Ncikazi for his years of service and acknowledged his desire to pursue a head coaching position.

Khoza praised the coach’s contribution to the club and wished him success in the next chapter of his career.

The chairman said Ncikazi departs with the club’s gratitude and support after helping the team achieve significant success on the domestic stage.

His exit marks the end of an important chapter for both the coach and the Buccaneers.

New Challenge Ahead

While Pirates have not disclosed the identity of the PSL club that will appoint Ncikazi, his return to a head coaching position is expected to generate considerable interest across South African football.

Having accumulated valuable experience at one of the country’s biggest clubs, the 57-year-old now faces the challenge of building and leading a team of his own once again.

For Orlando Pirates, attention now turns to maintaining stability within the technical team as they continue their push for success in domestic and continental competitions.

Meanwhile, supporters across the PSL will be watching closely to see where Ncikazi’s next managerial chapter begins.
