Tributes pour in for the celebrated actor, filmmaker and former Actors Guild leader whose career spanned more than three decades.

The Nigerian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Francis Duru, who has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness.

His family confirmed the news in a statement shared on the actor’s official Instagram page during the early hours of Friday, expressing gratitude to fans, colleagues and supporters for their prayers and unwavering support during a difficult time.

The family described Duru’s passing as a profound loss and requested privacy as they come to terms with the tragedy.

Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children.

Nollywood Loses a Respected Veteran

Francis Duru was widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most respected and recognizable actors, having built a career that stretched across more than three decades.

He first entered the Nigerian film industry in 1989 with his debut role in Missing Mark, a production directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko.

However, it was his performance as Ahanna in the iconic 1995 film Rattlesnake, produced by the late Amaka Igwe, that propelled him into national stardom and earned him a permanent place in Nollywood history.

The role established Duru as one of the industry’s leading talents and opened the door to a successful acting career that would span generations.

A Career Filled with Notable Performances

Throughout his career, Duru appeared in numerous acclaimed films and television productions, earning praise for his versatility and compelling performances.

Some of his most notable productions included Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013), and Mboputa (2020).

His contribution to Nigerian cinema helped shape the growth of Nollywood into one of the world’s largest film industries.

Colleagues frequently praised his professionalism, dedication and ability to mentor younger actors entering the industry.

Award-Winning Actor and Industry Leader

Duru’s achievements extended beyond acting.

In 2020, he received the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

He was also nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and gained recognition for his influence within the entertainment industry.

In 2007, he was honoured with the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award in recognition of his positive impact on young people and society.

Beyond the screen, Duru served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010, playing an important leadership role during a critical period for the organization.

From Cameroon to Nollywood Fame

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru completed both his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria to pursue higher education.

He later studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.

His academic background helped lay the foundation for a successful career in performance and storytelling.

Over the years, he became one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces, admired for both his on-screen presence and contributions behind the scenes.

Death Comes Months After Health Rumours

The actor’s death comes just months after he publicly dismissed rumours circulating online claiming he was suffering from a severe illness.

At the time, Duru released a video statement denying the reports and criticised those responsible for spreading misinformation regarding his health.

His passing has therefore come as a shock to many fans who believed the actor was in good health following his public response earlier this year.

Tributes Expected Across the Entertainment Industry

Following the announcement, tributes are expected to pour in from actors, filmmakers, public figures and fans across Africa and beyond.

Francis Duru leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Nollywood’s respected veterans, whose work inspired audiences and helped elevate African storytelling on the global stage.

His contribution to the growth of Nigerian cinema will be remembered for generations to come.

May his soul rest in peace.
